Amazon is updating its Kindle lineup with a new version of the $119 Kindle Paperwhite that sports a 1080 x 1440 pixel E Ink Carta display, much like the $199 Kindle Voyage.

The Voyage is still has a few extra tricks to help justify its premium price, but for most folks, the new Kindle Paperwhite is probably a better deal.

It’s available for pre-order now and it should start shipping at the end of June.

The Kindle Paperwhite has a 6 inch touchscreen display with a built-in light for reading in the dark, support for 802.11n WiFi, and if you want to spend $189 you can opt for a model with 3G capabilities as well.

Amazon says the new Paperwhite also supports the new Bookerly font and new typography features including improved hyphenation and character placement.

Amazon continues to offer an entry-level Kindle with a 600 x 800 pixel touchscreen display for $79. It’s not a bad device, but now the more expensive Paperwhite has a much crisper screen as well as a light.

As for the higher-priced Kindle Voyage, it features an adaptive light sensor and “PagePress” virtual buttons on the sides of the device which let you turn pages in an eBook without touching the screen (although you can touch the display if you’d prefer). The Voyage also has a glass screen that’s flush with the plastic sides of the eReader, while the Paperwhite screen is recessed.

The Kindle Voyage is also a little more compact than the Paperwhite. The Voyage measures 6.4″ x 4.5″ x 0.3″ and weighs 6.3 ounces, while the new Paperwhite is 6.7″ x 4.6″ x 0.36″ and 7.2 ounces.

  1. Still no SD slot and still no speaker? How does .PDF playback work now? Lots of potential issues lurking with this device. We need a proper review here.

    1. You sure you’re not looking at the version without special offers and/or the Canadian version? Amazon put out two press releases: one with a $119 price for the US and another with a $139 price for CA.

      1. No, I’m looking at the right place. The retail price is $139. That lower price is the subsidized price.

My point is that Amazon raised the retail price and increased the subsidy. Almost everyone missed that point.

          1. No worries, we all know I’m the only infallible person commenting on the Liliputing site. 🙂
