The Ugoos UM3 is a small box that you can plug into your TV to run Android apps. But unlike most devices that fit that description, this one can also run Ubuntu Linux.

That means you could use it to stream videos from YouTube or Netflix, play music from Pandora or Spotify, or play Android games. Then you could reboot the device and switch operating systems to run full desktop apps including LibreOffice and Firefox.

Ugoos offers a larger model called the UT3S which sells for about $179. But the Ugoos UM3 costs about $50 less.

It’s available from Geekbuying and Gearbest for $129. You may be able to score a better price from AliExpress: some sellers are offering the box for as little as $109 with free shipping included.

The box measures about 4.1″ x 2″ x 0.8″ and features a Rockchip RK3288 ARM Cortex-A17 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. There’s a microSD card slot for removable storage and there are also three USB ports which you can use to connect a hard drive, flash drive, or other peripherals.

It supports 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0, has an external antenna, and while there’s no Ethernet port, some stores list Ethernet as an option thanks to an optional USB to Ethernet adapter.

The Ugoos UM3 comes with an infrared remote control and an HDMI cable.

  1. If I were to use it as a Kodi player plugged to my TV, would Kodi need to be run from Android, or would it also from Ubuntu?

  2. I am using Purevpn and Ipvanish for kodi and its working awesome here. I suggest all the users to use these tools for streaming and unblocking..

  3. This would be great for the tv with kodi and a working vpn! (I’m currently using OpenElec/kodi on my Raspberry Pi, but haven’t yet been successful getting my vpn to work with it like it does on my Android and other Linux devices) I assume it will also work with a keyboard and mouse?

  4. Damn, you almost had me at Ethernet port!, it seems that some sellers include an USB-Ethernet adapter.

    1. Whoops. Sorry about that. I should really look at the pictures rather than just the text when writing up the specs for things like that!

      I’ve updated the article.
