Google is launching a new series of smartphone accessories called Editions. They’re basically limited-edition cases for a limited number of phones. But they’re designed in conjunction with high-profile partners and come with some semi-exclusive content.
The first models are a series of Skrillex Live Cases which are available for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, and Samsung Galaxy S6 for $40 each.
As the name suggests, the Skrillex Live Case was designed by musician Skrillex. There are a few different patterns available for the case itself, which covers the back and sides of your phone. But the case is also designed to work with a live wallpaper app that shows views of the earth during the daytime, and of the sky at night.
The case and wallpaper might be nifty even if you’re not familiar of Skrillex, but the other goodies are clearly aimed at fans. Buy a Live Case and you get early access to a free album from Google Play as we as well other updates from the artist. And there’s a shortcut button on the case that takes you to the Skrillex YouTube channel… because opening the YouTube app by tapping the screen clearly takes too long. Or something.
It sounds like this is just the first Live Case as part of Google’s Editions program. We may see more to come… assuming anyone buys the first entry.
