Luxury watch maker TAG Heuer recently announced plans to launch its first smartwatch. Now we have a rough idea of what it will cost and when it will launch.
The Swiss watch maker’s CEO Jean-Claude Biver tells Bloomberg the watch will sell for about $1,400 and it should be available in October or November.
TAG Heuer is partnering with Google and Intel to build the watch, indicating it’ll likely have a low-power Intel Atom processor and run Google’s Android Wear software.
Biver says the watch should also get around 40 hours of battery life. That’s about twice as much run time as you get from the Apple Watch, but it sounds about right for an Android Wear watch.
The price tag is another story. While the TAG Heuer smartwatch will cost considerably less than the priciest Apple Watch models, it’s set to sell for four times as much as a $349 LG G Watch Urbane… which is one of the most expensive Android Wear devices on the market.
Still, this is the kind of device that could theoretically hit a sweet spot for some users: TAG Heuer has a reputation for offering high-quality wristwear and the upcoming smartwatch could offer the kind of build quality and style that watch enthusiasts are looking for. At the same time, if the watch’s hardware and software starts to feel dated in a few years, it’ll be a lot cheaper to replace than a $10,000 Apple Watch Edition.
