Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek recently unveiled a line of Helio processors which it says are aimed at high-performance devices including phones, tablets, and other devices. One of the first chips will be the Helio X10, which is an 8-core, ARM Cortex-A53 processor.

But 8 cores are old hat at this point. Now it looks like MediaTek may also be working on a 10-core chip.

According to a Chinese analyst who attended an event with MediaTek recently, the new processor is said to be called the Helio X20 and the chip maker claims it can score higher than 70,000 on the AnTuTu benchmark,

It’s usually a good idea to take benchmark scores with a grain of salt, since they don’t always reflect real-world performance… but at this point just about all we know about the Helio X20 is its name, core-count, and claimed AnTuTu score, so I figured it was worth mentioning.

MediaTek reportedly plans to begin producing the X20 chip by the end of 2015.

Update: Word on the street is that the Helio X20 could feature 2 ARM Cortex-A57 processors cores and 8 ARM Cortex-A53 cores packed together in a 4×4 big.LITTLE arrangement.

Update 2: Or maybe it’ll have 2 ARM Cortex-A72 cores and 8 Cortex-A53 cores.

  1. MediaTek processors should come for PCs also , intel and amd would stand aside

  2. How is the MTK GPS? Even the latest models are still crap and you can get the GPS lock for minutes in open space … 🙁

  3. I think this SoC might not be using ARM. I think this SoC might be using a next gen mips I6400 ‘Warrior’ core, the 10 core setup is the giveaway.

  4. Conflicting information as Arm design A72 to be fabricated on 16nm process but they are using 20 nm.

    1. No, ARM only states that it’s optimized for the 16nm FinFET process technology but nothing is really stopping them from using other FAB options… Besides, it’s probably mixed nodes… and components like the GPU are still going to be on the 20nm in either case…

  5. Just as important is how energy efficient it is. All the processing power in the world isn’t going to do you any good if the battery is dead.

    1. This Mediatek Helio looks far more interesting than Atom in many ways.
