HP updates Pavilion x360 family of 2-in-1 notebooks

04/22/2015 at 12:01 AM by Brad Linder 8 Comments

The school year hasn’t ended yet, but HP is already starting to unveil its 2015 back-to-school line of computers including new HP Pavilion notebooks with 14 through 17 inch screens and an updated HP Envy x360 convertible with a 15.6 inch display.

But I’m more interested in the smaller, mostly cheaper models: HP is updating its Pavilion x360 line of convertible notebooks with new model featuring Intel Braswell, Core M, or Core i3 processors.

The new HP Pavilion x360 convertible should be available from HP.com starting May 13th.

Like earlier versions of the HP Pavilion x360, the new models feature touchscreen displays that can be pushed 360 degrees so that the notebook becomes a tablet. But HP has given the notebooks a new hinge for smoother movement. The company says the laptop is now equally thin whether used in notebook or tablet mode, since the hinge doesn’t stick up in tablet mode.

HP will offer models with 1366 x 768 pixel or 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS display options, and each model features Bang & Olufsen audio. The notebooks will be available in a range of colors including silver, red, purple and green.

The 11.6 inch model will be a fanless system with a 32 Whr battery and a choice of Intel Celeron, Pentium or Core M-5Y10C processors. The notebook will be available with up to 8GB of RAM. HP says this model gets up to 8.25 hours of battery life.

HP will offer the 13.3 inch model with up to a Core i5 Broadwell processor and a 48 Whr battery and up to 16GB of RAM. The larger model is not fanless, but HP says the laptop should get up to 13 hours of battery life.

Both models will be available with solid state and hard drive storage options and each model features two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, and an Ethernet jack as well as an SD card reader.

While HP hasn’t revealed pricing for all configurations yet, here are a few sample prices the company has shared:

  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, Pentium N3700, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive for $410
  • 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, Core M-5Y10C, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD for $500
  • 13.3 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, Core i3 CPU, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD for $530

Looks like a major improvement all around compared to last year’s blah x360. Hope its easy to swap out the hard drive for an SSD (which are really getting cheap).

Hopefully, though… people like me who have been playing doctor on our mobile devices even if we have to de-solder and re-solder SMT components won’t be deterred either way :-p

Why would a company like Sony want to license the Bang and Olufsen name? Even ignoring the fact that my one and only Bang and Olufsen product (some headphones) sucked, isn’t a company like Sony able to design simple speakers?

Maybe you posted on the wrong article? But I guess you haven’t heard that Sony has been splitting off and re-optimizing its business… Last split off was for their Video-and-Sound Divisions!

Basically, Sony has been losing too much money and they’re on a 3 year planned changes regiment as they restructure their business to try to make themselves profitable again…

Thanks for that info. I wasn’t aware of that.

As to the wrong article comment, the article does mention B&O.

Well, for HP it’s more understandable… They’re probably getting paid off by B&O as well… and it’s not like HP has the reputation to worry about in that regard…

I finally got what you were saying. I have no idea why I wrote Sony rather than HP. That’s a strange transition to make. I don’t even typically think a lot about Sony as a computer maker.

“11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, Core M-5Y10C, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD for $500”

This one looks appealing enough. More so if there’s an i3 + 8GB RAM option too but for 500 yeah still good. Need this little guy for a semi serious Linux setup. I wonder if there will be a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 answer to this down the road.
