Acer is best known as a PC company, but for the past few years the company has been taking small steps into the smartphone space, and now Acer has announced that it will begin selling phones in the United States.

The Acer Liquid M220 is a low-cost Windows phone that will be available from the Microsoft Store in June for $80.

For that price you probably shouldn’t expect a lot… because you won’t get it. The smartphone features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a 4 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display and a 1,300 mAh battery.

But it’ll ship with Windows Phone 8.1, get a Windows 10 software update when Microsoft releases the next version of its smartphone operating system, which means you get Office, Cortana, and other Microsoft apps and services.

The phone supports 802.11n WiFi. Bluetooth 4.0, and has a microSD card slot, a 5MP rear camera with auto-focus and LED flash and an 89-degree wide angle lens, and a 2MP fixed-focus front camera.

  1. If an 8 inch tablet with an IPS screen and almost the same bevy of sensors as a phone can be sold for $100 (and I’m sure make a generous enough profit), I’m a little curious as to why phone manuf. aren’t jumping on the Windows Phone bandwagon….is it because smaller chips are more expensive and so it’s just not worth producing the devices since so few buy them?

Ultimately, I would think that 2GB of RAM, 32GB Storage and a 4-6″ screen shouldn’t break $100 for a nicer WP10 device. Granted, I know that 1GB of RAM is fine for WP, it’s super fluid, but I’m just making an example here. As I mentioned, you can pick up lots of tablets with an Intel Quad Core Atom CPU, 2GB RAM and 16-32GB RAM for ~$100 so I’m curious to know why this can’t be/hasn’t been done on phones. Most of the WP with higher specs range $400+ I see they mostly use Qualcomm though – are those more expensive than Intel chips or are there other factors that contribute to this pricing?

I got my Mom a Moto G but Android is a bit much for her. I mean, she’s not stupid, she uses it, but isn’t very tech savvy and I feel like big bright tiles would be better for her, more in her lane vs. a bunch of icons or widgets. I also love that Windows 10 will unify everything so stuff she does on her notebook and is familiar with will follow over to the phone and vice versa. I just don’t want to spend $400 on one and I believe in getting something that is future proof, so something with stronger than the bare minimum specs that will likely be upgradeable to WP 10.x

  2. Not bad. Most Windows phones for the price include only 512 MB of RAM and don’t feature flash. I’m sure it wont be long before its on sale for 30-50% off.

  3. You can get an Phone with way better specs for $50 on aliexpress…why would want to pay $80 for a 4inch phone?

    1. warranty and at least a minimum gauge of QA control? Using your logic, ALL of your electronics should be bought from Aliexpress then.
