Samsung unveiled the first members of its new Galaxy Tab A series of mid-range tablets this week. They come in 8 and 9.7 inch sizes, feature quad-core 64-bit processors, and have 4:3 aspect ratio displays.
We first learned about the tablets when Samsung held an event in Russia. Now Samsung Netherlands has issued a press release with more details: including the fact that at least one model will be available with an S-Pen.
Samsung’s S-Pen is a digital pen that works with an active digitizer to enable pressure-sensitive writing or drawing on the screen. You can also hover the pen over the tablet to interact with certain apps without touching the screen.
In the Netherlands Samsung will offer an S-Pen enabled version of the Galaxy Tab A with a 9.7 inch screen and 16GB of storage for € 349 (about $370 US). A model without the S-Pen will run € 299 ($317).
Other features include 1.5 GB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera, a 2MP front camera, a 1024 x 768 pixel display and a relatively compact design: the tablet measures about 0.3 inches thick and weighs about 1 pound.
There’s no word on whether this model will be available in the US or other markets anytime soon.

2011 called, they want their screen back.
4:3 aspect ratio is the key improvement here. That alone will improve the note-taking and reading experience. It’s essentially the android version of an iPad air but with active stylus (though probably not of comparable build quality). Price is reasonable for Europe. Samsung, please sell these in the US. I’ll buy.
Agree that 4:3 is good, but 1024×768 resolution is more like an ipad 2 than the air. Screen will look fuzzy if you compare side-by-side with a recent model ipad. Too bad ’cause otherwise it’s not bad for a budget tablet.
Honestly, 1024×768 isn’t that bad, but for a tablet where you’re writing with a digitizer pen, that’s pretty terrible.
The resolution, the RAM , This is not even improved compare with the note 8.0 come out of late 2012, and you can find price of that for around $350 for brand new one. have been waiting for new Gen of note 8.0 come out, now, so disappointed. What are you thinking, Samsung,
