Want a tablet that can run the thousands of apps and games available in the Google Play Store, but which handles multitasking the way a Windows notebook would?

Jide’s Remix Ultra Tablet promises to do just that. It’s a 2-in-1 tablet with an 11.6 inch display, a built-in dual-angle kickstand, and a wireless keyboard. It runs a custom version of Android called Remix OS which adds a taskbar and support for running apps in resizable windows… which makes Android feel more like Microsoft Windows.

Jide unveiled the tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and now the company is running a Kickstarter campaign before bringing the Remix tablet to market. One goal of the campaign is to raise money… but another is to develop a community of beta testers willing to help improve the software.

The Kickstarter campaign is now live.

As promised, the company is promising to send a tablet to people who back the crowdfunding campaign at any reward level — including the $39 level. But as expected, there are a limited number of $39 rewards. Once they’re gone, you’ll have to pledge a higher amount to get your hands on the tablet.

Jide’s reward levels will include 200 tablets available for $39, 200 more for $199 and 500 units for $349.

Update: Not surprisingly, the $39 tablets went almost immediately.

The company says that’s just the initial allocation, but there may be additional tiers level.

Jide has already developed a Chinese language version of Remix OS, but the company is hoping that Kickstarter backers will help test the English language version of the software to help polish things before the tablet is launched commercially.

The tablet features a 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS display, an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a microSD card slot, an 8100 mAh battery, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

It looks a lot like a Microsoft Surface, and like Microsoft’s tablet, the Jide Remix Tablet is designed to work both as a touchscreen tablet and as a notebook replacement. There are plenty of productivity apps for Android including office apps from Microsoft, Google, Kingsoft, Polaris, and others… but using them in full-screen only mode can be a bit awkward if you’re used to flipping back and forth between apps when entering data from an email or web page into a spreadsheet, for instance. Remix OS helps address that by letting you view multiple apps on the screen at once, or switch between apps by tapping icons in the taskbar.

On the other hand, the tablet has access to thousand of touch-optimized apps that might not be available for Windows tablet users. The Google Play Store is a bit livelier than the Windows Store these days, even if it doesn’t include legacy software been developed for desktop operating systems such as Windows, OS X, or GNU/Linux-based operating systems such as Ubuntu or Fedora.

  1. Are you scared your kids might be using Yahoo Messenger for the wrong kind of conversations? Yahoo Messenger commonly used by your employees but you have no idea what they are doing on it? How would you like to be able to know exactly who they are calling and what they are chatting about? 1TopSpy is a mobile phone spy software which allows you to track your monitor phone in real time. This powerful program silently records all the activities on the target phone. Data then uploaded to your secured online account which only you can access to view and manage.

  2. There was a great Linux Distro called Remix OS. I wonder if it’s the same people?

  3. Not only that but it appears that no safe gards were put in to stop folks from ordering more than one! That restricted the actual amount of folks who actually got one! Oh well, we’ll see some on ebay soon is my guess!

  4. I ALMOST Had it. kicking myself for not adding my card ahead of time.

  5. Can’t believe I didn’t set an alarm. Well I missed it…. Not buying this tablet for full price.

  6. This is a neat idea, and the $39 price tag had me refreshing the page (still didn’t get one) but the next tier of $199 seems a little risky for a two year old chip.

I hope it works out for them, but I think this might generate more bad buzz than good as they now have thousands of people who feel a little let down.

    1. I wanted one at $40, but for $200 why wouldn’t i just get a cheap dual-boot baytrail tablet? I seriously think this was just to clear out old stock because nobody would pay $400 for such old hardware…

    2. (39×200)+(199×200)/400= $119
Yes they wasted a chance to have 400 people be satisfied. Drums up lively conversation but not impressed here.

  7. The $39 tier is already gone.

I tried to back, and the attempt has even further soured my opinion of Kickstarter. When I clicked the pledge button, there were several backer slots still available, but by the time I entered my payment info, the slots were all pulled out from under me.

    1. Me too. I tried to add my credit card info the day before, but couldn’t find a way to do it. Apparently you have to pledge something before they let you put it in.
