The original Samsung Galaxy S smartphone launched in mid-2010 and it’s been a long time since Samsung has release a software update for the phone. But nearly 5 years later independent developers are keeping the phone up to date.

Xda-developers forum member humberos has released a custom ROM that brings Android 5.1 Lollipop to the first-gen Samsung Galaxy S.

The firmware is based on the open source OmniROM project, and as of mid-March, 2015 the software is still described as an alpha, so proceed with caution.

Still, I’m always impressed with users pick up where device makers leave off and continue to support older hardware.

The original Samsung Galaxy S features a 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 single-core processor, PowerVR SGX 540 graphics, and has 512MB of RAM. It has a 4 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display. The phone supports GSM and HSPA networks and the latest official operating system released for the Samsung Galaxy S was Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Other features include 8GB to 16GB of storage, a microSd card slot, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, a 5MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera.

By today’s standards the Galaxy S is hardly an impressive phone. But if it happens to be the phone you already have, installing unofficial software updates like OmniROM could prolong its useful life.
