Recently we spotted evidence that NVIDIA is getting ready to launch a new version of its Shield Portable handheld game console with new features including 802.11ac WiFi and Android 5.0 software.

It seemed like a safe bet at the time that the new model would also get a faster processor than the Tegra 4 chip used in the original (which launched in 2013).

Now there’s a little more evidence that the next-gen Shield Portable will have NVIDIA’s new Tegra X1 processor.

Indian import and export site Zuaba shows listings for a product code-named “Loki” which has the model number P2523. That’s the same model number found in other listings for the new Shield Portable, and Loki fits with NVIDIA’s naming convention (other devices have Marvel comics-related code-names such as Thor and Logan).

According to the Zauba listings, Loki features a T210 processor (which is another name for the Tegra X1 chip), and it may sport a 5.66 inch touchscreen display (which would be a little bigger than the 5 inch screen on the original).

NVIDIA hasn’t yet acknowledge that the company is even working on a replacement for the original Shield Portable. But if there is a new model, and if it does have the X1 processor, it would be one of the first portable devices to use the chip.

When NVIDIA first introduced its 64-bit processor with NVIDIA Maxwell graphics, the company showed it off running in automotive systems. The only other device that’s been confirmed to use the processor is the upcoming NVIDIA Shield console which is a small box designed to sit next to your TV while plugged into a wall jack.

If the Tegra X1 can be used in portable devices like a handheld game console, that probably means NVIDIA is confident that it can offer decent performance without overheating or running down the battery in a matter of minutes.

  1. If they slim it down just a little (I dont mind the form factor (based on pictures, I haven’t actually used one)) that would be amazing, just imagine one of these with a more DS like form factor. Now, if slimming it means losing the fan, by all means stick with the old design, performance>appearance imo.

  2. the listing shows that it is exported from USA to BANGLORE. shouldn’t it be the other way around?

  3. I really hope a new Shield Portable is on the way as I love my Shield Portable.

    1. Well … you can hope in one hand and crap in the other … see which one fills up first.

        1. Kick rocks?

          Really?

          Kick rocks …

So disappointed in you grasshopper …

  4. The Tegra X1 should be far more power efficient than the Tegra 4. ie if you were to keep all other HW the same including battery, and tested some average games on a Tegra 4 Shield Portable and a X1 Shield portable. The X1 Shield portable should last longer. It would only use more power when you start pushing the X1 close to its limits and beyond what the Tegra 4 is capable of.

    1. true! Looking forward to see how the battery time is when it runs Crysis 3, borderlands 2 or any of the other new AAA games that it will run
