Chip maker MediaTek has unveiled a new platform designed to let devices on the same network share hardware and software.

Want to watch TV without disturbing the people around you? Then route the audio from your TV to your smartphone and listen using headphones. Want to search for content on that same smart TV without using a remote control? Just use the mic on your phone for voice search.

MediaTek calls the platform CrossMount and says it’ll be available to customers and partners in the third quarter of 2015.

At launch MediaTek says CrossMount will be available for implementation on Android or Linux devices including smartphones, tablets, and TVs.

The platform is designed to make it easy to discover and pair devices when they’re on a shared WiFi or LAN network or through WiFi Direct. This lets you do things like use your phone or tablet’s camera for video conferencing while using your TV as a big screen display.

MediaTek says CrossMoutn is based on the UPnP protocol, which suggests that it could work with existing hardware that supports the platform. But the company wants to make CrossMount a new standard that could be supported out of the box on upcoming hardware.

The company is creating a group called the CrossMount Alliance and initial partners include Lenovo, TCL, Hisense, and Changhong.
