Buy a smartphone, laptop, or other gadget and you’ll probably get a limited warranty that essentially covers hardware failures that aren’t your fault. But if you want insurance against things that are your fault, you typically need to pay extra for an accidental damage plan.
HTC is shaking things up a bit by bundling a new 1-year accidental damage plan with its new HTC One M9 smartphone. Drop your phone, step on it, let it fall into the toilet, and HTC will replace it for you. Once. Don’t get too careless.
HTC calls the new service UH OH Protection and it covers water damage or cracked screens. HTC will even send you a new phone if you decide to switch carriers.
The plan is good for 12 months and if you don’t need your phone replaced within that time, HTC will give you a $100 discount on your next purchase of an HTC One phone.
Don’t want to wait for a new phone to arrive before sending in your damaged model? You can get a replacement one day before you send your broken phone to HTC, but the company will place a $299 hold on your credit card until the phone arrives. Or you can send your phone in first with a prepaid shipping label and wait for a replacement to arrive 2 days after HTC receives your phone.
The HTC One M9 smartphone features a 5 inch full HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 20MP rear camera, a 4MP front-facing Ultrapixel camera, and a 2840 mAh battery. It has a microSD card slot and the phone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. And now if you break one you can get it replaced at no additional charge.
HTC says US carriers will start offering the phone in April.
