Looking for a decent, cheap smartphone? The 2013 Motorola Moto G used to sell for $180 when you bought a 3G model or $219 when for a 4G model. Now you can buy a 3G version for just $60 if you want to use it with pre-paid network Boost Mobile. Want an unlocked 4G model? That’ll be just $160 (or about $40 less than Motorola is charging on its own website).

Sure, there’s a newer version of the Moto G, but the specs haven’t changed very much (although the new model does have better speakers and a camera).

  1. You can get a used moto x lte 1st generation for around $120 on eBay. Why pay more for a Lower specced g?

  2. I’d like to give a heads up for anyone being enticed by the Insignia 8″ Windows tablet. I’ve owned one for the past 5 months. The build quality is actually quite good. The screen is nice as well. The headphone jack is noisy (think a tinnitus-like woosh in the background)… built-in speaker is fine. Bluetooth audio is fine.

16GB storage is a challenge. After a few Windows updates without any manual pruning, free-space is 3GB. 1GB RAM seems adequate for what I’ve done with the device. I’ve had to aggressively delete stuff like WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload to reclaim space… I have more investigation to do.

The upside (for me, maybe others), it runs 32bit Windows 8.1…. that means legacy support for Win16 apps. I’ve been able to load the old “Microsoft Home” titles on it, Cinemania, Dangerous Creatures, etc. (Win 8.1’s native support/mounting for .iso files makes it pretty easy to get going).

I’ve purchased a USB version of a Sega Genesis controller and installed Fusion (Sega Genesis/32X/Sega CD emulator) on it. The Insignia makes a terrific Sega gaming system.

If anyone goes into buying one knowing these limitations/issues I think they’ll be pleased.
