We’ve got smart phones, smart watches, smart cars, and even smart homes. Why not add a smart toolbox to the mix?

Coolbox is described as a toolbox for the 21st century. More than just a basic carrying case for your screwdrivers, hammers, and mystery tools, this box will be outfitted with such tech features as a three-way cord splitter, Bluetooth speakers, USB charging ports, an internal battery so you can plug in power tools, and even a bottle opener.

The Coolbox’s creators are seeking funding via IndieGoGo and have already raised far more money than the original $50,000 goal.

Early backers can reserve a Coolbox for $169. You can also get a special Coolbox-and-tools package for $209. The base price during the campaign is $189. The developers of the Coolbox hope to sell it for a retail price of $299 eventually.

When completed, this thing will come with just about everything you would need for a portable household toolkit, plus a few things you don’t need, but it would be cool to have.

Coolbox 1

Here is a list:

  • A digital clock
  • An auxiliary jack
  • Two smartphone or tablet stands (groove style)
  • A dry erase whiteboard
  • LED Lights (bright enough to light your work area)
  • Wireless Bluetooth speakers
  • Two USB ports
  • A bottle opener
  • A magnetic lid
  • An internal 20v rechargeable LiPo battery with 120/240v pass-through power
  • A retractable Power Cord to charge the internal battery
  • A three-way splitter for power tools and small appliances
  • Various storage trays

From the looks of it, you would think this box is more tech than storage container. However, it is designed to be big enough to fit dozens of household tools. It has a capacity of 1797.12 cubic inches and up to 65 pounds of weight.

Coolbox 2

Plus, there are plans for a built-in compartment so you can toss a few cubes of ice and a couple of Cold Ones to keep you refreshed while you work on your project.

You can reserve a Coolbox by pledging to the company’s IndieGoGo campaign before March 27. Shipping is expected in June of 2015.

  1. It looks cool, but it needs to hold tools, not “cold ones”.
A real tool box needs to be able to hold more than a pair of slip joint pliers and a #2 screwdriver.
You need room for the real stuff even in a home situation.

  2. At first I thought the whiteboard was a eInk tablet.

This isn’t a smart toolbox. It’s a cheap “The Sharper Image” type of product with a bunch of low-tech Fry’s checkout stand impulse buy items tacked on.

A “smart” toolbox would at the very least have a computer database and use NFC to make sure that all your tools are always accounted for. (The tools would need to be NFC compatible)
