Apple is not exactly known for being open with its behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s sort of like the Disneyland of the tech world. You know, to keep the illusion of perfection, the sweaty characters are hidden behind closed doors until showtime.

Traditionally, beta versions of Apple software updates have only been available to developers. However, last year, the company successfully seeded a public beta of OS X Yosemite. It appears the success of that venture has led Apple to expand the public beta program. Today, the company launched a public beta of iOS 8.3 so anyone with an iOS device and Apple ID can sign up to test out the software right now.

Apple Public Beta Program Sign Up

Just a short time ago, Apple seeded the third beta of iOS 8.3 to developers and right after that, launched a revamped version of the public beta website that was previously designed for OS X Yosemite to include iOS.

To start, visit Apple’s Beta Software Program website and sign in using your Apple ID. According to The Verge, once you’ve signed up and enrolled your iOS device in the public beta program, you will be able to install a package file that will give you access to the software. Then, you will be able to install iOS 8.3 beta 3.

As you use the beta, you’ll be able to let Apple know directly when you come across issues by using the built-in Feedback Assistance app.

iOS 8.3 beta 3 includes bug fixes, a new set of emoji icons, wireless CarPlay, updates for Google login, and a few other minor tweaks.

Of course, it is important to back up your iOS device before downloading the software and it would be much safer to use a secondary device instead of your main one, just in case something important to you isn’t working properly in the beta version.

  1. Signed in and all that showed was the OS X Yosemite Beta Program, not the iOS 8.3 Beta Program.
