According to a recent changelog, VideoLan’s universal media player is getting a huge update that will include support for the Chromecast dongle. This means that users will be able to stream a wide variety of movies, television shows, music, and more on their television set through the VLC media player using the connected device.
You will be able to stream media to the Chromecast dongle from Android (in beta), Mac, Windows, and a variety of Linux devices. Support for iOS comes and goes. Currently, the app is available in the New Zealand App Store and there is speculation that it will re-launch worldwide very soon.
VideoLan’s changelog was posted seven days ago, so the feature should be ready to roll out soon. However, support for Chromecast, as well as some of the other new features have yet to appear in the application.
Of course, there are other popular media player apps available, like MX Player on Android, and Chromecast already supports streaming media services like Plex. However, an open market brings more options. Adding VLC to Chromecast will give one more service for users to choose from.

out-of-date hardware. anyone still using it? if so what for?
And yet VideoLAN group was paid 50,000USD to port it to Windows 8/8.1 RT 3-4 years ago and not a damn bit of progress has been made on that front.
What a farce.
There are beta versions out for the RT compatible version of VLC.
They got a version out for RT last March, almost a year ago, it was a little sketchy. The newer versions are really well done though, its a pretty solid experience at the moment.
