Just over a decade ago, I was still using a stand-alone digital point-and-shoot camera. It is hard to believe that, in such a short time, camera phones would become the main way most of us take pictures.
Samsung knows how important camera technology is on our smartphones. On the company’s blog, head of Camera R&D, DongHoon Jang, explains how much work goes into developing new camera technology.
Only a few weeks before Samsung is expected to reveal the next-generation Galaxy S model, Jang details the company’s progress from being the first company to integrate a 0.3MP camera into a mobile phone in 2000 (0.3MP… how quaint), to building a smartphone with a 16MP camera in 2014.
Jang also teases the future of the front-facing camera. He points out that the “selfie” has become an integral part of our daily lives (as the “selfie stick” proves). With the latest generation Galaxy A series all featuring a 5MP front-facing camera, Samsung recognizes that it is much more important than it was a few years ago.
SamMobile has information about a prototype of what is supposedly the next-gen Galaxy S camera. According to an unnamed source, the prototype sports a 20MP rear camera with optical image stabilization and a 5MP front-facing camera.
There is no news as to whether the camera will feature optical zoom technology.
Around the bend, Bloomberg is reporting that Samsung is planning on launching two versions of the next-generation Galaxy smartphones next month.
One will supposedly feature a three-sided wraparound style 5.1-inch curved display screen. The other will have a traditional flat display with the same dimensions. Both will sport a metal case.
The curved screen model will purportedly be similar to Samsung’s Note Edge, but have the rounded edge across the left and right sides.
Samsung will most likely, reveal all at its March 1 “Galaxy Unpacked” event in Barcelona.
