Great news for any low-RAM Windows Phone owners out there. Microsoft Engineering General Manager Gabriel Aul let slip via Twitter that the initial Windows 10 Technical Preview will support (at least some) 512MB devices.

We are still waiting to find out the official list of supported devices for the first preview. However, when asked, “Can you at least confirm that one of them will be 512MB ram device?” Aul responded, with faux reluctance, that there will be 512MB device support.

His confirmation is vague, to say the least. We don’t know which low-RAM devices will support Windows 10. There is also a good chance that, while the first preview can run on them, later builds (and more importantly, the final product) might not.

In other Windows 10 for mobile news, a couple of screenshots have surfaced of a Windows phone running the Technical Preview. The pictures show off an updated action center, settings section, and a quote from Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Russell Wilson – “Every setback has a major comeback.”

Last month, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would be a free upgrade for PC, notebooks, tablets, and phones. The company hopes to unify mobile and desktop computing with a more universal look across all devices. The company has already announced that Windows 10 will run on the majority of Lumia phones. We are just waiting to see what other mobile devices can handle the new operating system.

  1. I hope W10 will be officially supporting whole Lumia lineup.
Also, I expect them to make W10 for laptops/tablets more touch-friendly, because W8.1 isnt as good as W8.1P for touch!

  2. Brace yourselves, the complaints about low ram devices being not enough to do anything is coming.

    1. I guess it will probably crawl like a turtle with only 512 MB.

What can go wrong? Just like Vista did when….Oh wait! 😀

    1. Good question. Better question: why did anyone buy a device without at least 1 MB of RAM?

      1. …because:
        (A) the Lumia 520 is an amazing phone for the price. (regularly available for $50 off-contract) I’m not using it as a phone at the moment (more like a Zune: The Next Generation).

        (B) Windows Phone performs well (or at least does under WP 8) with 512MB RAM.

          1. That’s been a over used comparison, but the truth is unlike the desktop version the mobile Windows OS is very well optimized and light weight OS to run… It sits between Android and iOS for how well optimized it is to run…

And the mobile Windows 10 is specifically replacing WP for such devices and is suppose to be similarly optimized… We’ll see but it’s not like there aren’t already multiple WP devices running on 512MB that actually got good reviews… and this news means those devices can at least be upgraded and not left out of the updates to Windows 10…
