Google’s Android One program is expanding to the Philippines and Indonesia, where the low-cost phones are shipping with Android 5.1 Lollipop software. But the Android One program launched first in India last year, and up until recently customers in that country were stuck with Android 4.4 KitKat.

Now Google’s Caesar Sengupta has announced that the company is starting to roll out Lollipop to Android One phones in India.

Google is only pushing Lollipop to a small number of phones for now, but plans to add more users every week. Sengupta says you’ve got a better chance of getting the over-the-air update if you’re connected to the internet over WiFi.

While Sengupta didn’t say which version of Lollipop it was releasing, I’d be surprised if the company wasn’t pushing Android 5.1 instead of Android 5.0. It’s already available for other Android One phones with similar hardware.

Google hasn’t officially announced Android 5.1 yet, but the folks at Android Police have been uncovering new features in the latest version of Android and running a series of articles showing off changes to notifications, volume settingsquick settings, and new animations, among other things.

  1. Indeed Doug! I was about to state the same thing and you beat me to it!!! Russia of all places got it already, nothing says “Totalitarian regimes first!” Than giving the current most aggressive regime the latest software first and the third world follows up! Maybe we should invade Mexico or Canada! It may send us to the head of the line!

  2. looks like America has finally been reduced to a third world country…not surprising we dont get technology here much anymore,,,so we are always told india and china s people are dirt poor but they get the newest tech, and we get Blu
