Corning makes the damage-resistant Gorilla Glass screens used in a large number of premium smartphones. But now the company’s working on a new technology which it says will be even more scratch-resistant.
Project Phire is an effort to create new screens that are almost as tough to scratch as sapphire displays, but which are less likely to crack when dropped.
The technology could be used in upcoming smartphones, smartwatches, or other mobile devices that are likely to take a beating.
Right now there aren’t many devices that use sapphire screens, and Corning is apparently hoping to keep things that way. Sapphire is harder to scratch than the company’s existing Gorilla Glass, but the upcoming Project Phire screens could help bridge that gap.
It’s not clear how long we’ll have to wait to see products using the new screens though.
