On the heals of an investor conference where Asus revealed the rebranded ZenPad tablet, the company has announced the launch of a refresh to its entry-level 7-inch smartphone.

The revamped Fonepad 7 (model number FE375CL) runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop that is powered by the company’s ZenUI interface. Just like its predecessor, it is capable of both Wi-Fi connectivity and cellular phone calls.

The multi-touch 7-inch screen has a resolution of 800 x 1200 pixels and the device weighs about 10.5 ounces. It measures 7.6” x 4.3” and is 0.4 inches thick.

The new Fonepad 7 features a 1.3 GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3530 processor and has a micro SIM card slot. It supports 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE connectivity. It also supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

It comes with a 2MP front-facing camera and a 5MP rear-facing camera. The tablet sized smartphone is also equipped with 2GB of RAM and 8GB or 16GB of memory, plus 5GB of cloud storage and a microSD card slot for up to 64GB of memory.

Asus claims the Fonepad 7’s battery can last up to 12 hours on video playback, 22.5 hours of 3G talk, and 397 hours of 4G standby.

The new Fonepad 7 is a slight improvement over its processor with a faster processor, better screen resolution, longer battery life, and dual front-facing speakers.

Asus also offers a folio style cover with a peek-a-boo window on the front so you can see alerts and notifications without having to open the case.

The Fonepad 7 launches in Taiwan first for $250. There is no official information as to when it will launch globally.

  1. The Zenfone line is really good, so that bodes well for the upgrade of this line. I hope the cameras are better than these specs reveal… At least a decent amount of memory and capable CPU.

  2. Where’s the camera flash! I want a 7inch phablet, but must have decent camera with a flash: I use the torch all day long.

  3. If they want this to sell, they should do what Huawei does with their big phones and give me a bluetooth “buddy” handset. I find it rather obscene that I would otherwise take a call by sticking this up to my face.

  4. Maybe Asus will see fit to upgrade it’s previous 7 and 8 inch tablets with INTEL processors to 5.0…I will not buy anymore ASUS products until I see recent tabs treated to proper support!

    1. All the Zenfones are suppose to be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop… It was reported back in October 2014 that the updates should start rolling out around April 2015…

No word on the higher end tablets yet, though… but Lollipop’s roll out seems to be pretty slow at the moment for Android devices in general…
