Chip maker Rockchip is showing off a platform for a $10 box that you can plug into a TV to display internet or local video.

I suspect $10 is the factory price rather than the actual retail price, but even with a 200 percent markup, it could allow device makers to ship low-cost smart TV hardware for $20.

The platform is based on a Rockchip RK3036 dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor with Mali-400 graphics and support for 1080p HD video playback.

It has just 256MB of RAM and 2GB of flash storage. That’s not enough to offer bleeding edge performance, but it should be enough to let you run one app at a time for streaming videos from the internet. Rockchip says the system is optimized for Android 4.4 KitKat.

The $10 box features WiFi, HDMI, and a USB port and the chip maker is showing off a wireless remote control, although it’s not clear if that would be included in the $10 price or if you’d nee to provide your own remote, keyboard, or gamepad.

  1. I’m disappointed in CES this year. I haven’t seen anything I’ve been excited about.
What are your thoughts in general about CED 2015, Brad?

    1. Ask me again next week… no seriously. I’ve been so busy finding/reporting on news that I haven’t had a lot of time to stop and think about it.

I am sorely tempted to pick up one of those Dell XPS 13 units for my next notebook though… but hopefully I can squeeze another year or two out of my Samsung Series 9. By the time it dies maybe there’ll be something even better in the same price range.

  2. Ha ha, free advertisement to show a us9.90 price to get attention, but that day will never come in next 10 years

    1. It also doesn’t appear to have an ethernet port. I’m sure he is under a fair amount of stress though.

        1. Sometimes I wonder if they have to pump vaporized adrenaline into the ventilation system. Thanks for running around churning out pictures and articles at incredible speed so that we can get our small computing fix. Feel free to take a break after it’s over; I think it takes a few days before my Liliputing withdrawal symptoms start to kick in.

          1. Hehe, it’s called caffeine.

I’m actually heading home tomorrow, but I’ve got a few more goodies to write up before my flight takes off.

FYI, you can get a rough look at stuff I’m working on by checking out my YouTube channel. I’m uploading videos faster than I’m writing. 🙂
