Lenovo plans to bring NEC’s LaVie Z line of thin-and-light laptops to the US this year, where you’ll be able to buy one of these super-lightweight 13.3 inch laptops with the Lenovo brand name on it. Lenovo showed off the laptops at the Consumer Electronics Show, and while they’re not the thinnest or smallest laptops I’ve ever held, they’re certainly some of the lightest.
But they’re also kind of old news, since the LaVie Z family features 4th-gen Intel Core “Haswell” processors and the laptops have been available in Japan for some time.
Now NEC has introduced its next-gen models. The LaVie Hybrid Zero is a new lightweight laptop that sports a 5th-gen Intel Core “Broadwell” processor.
The laptop measures 16.9 mm (about 0.67 inches) thick and weighs just 779 grams (about 1.7 pounds).
There’s also a 2-in-1 model with a touchscreen display that rotates 360 degrees so you can place the display back-to-back with the keyboard and use the notebook like a tablet. That model weighs a bit more, at 926 grams (2.04 pounds).
Each model has a 13.3 inch full HDÂ or WQHDÂ display and NEC will offer models with Intel Core i5-5200U or Core i7-5500U processors and 4GB to 8GB of RAM.
The company is only promising up to 6 hours of battery life on an entry-level model, while higher-priced machines offer up to 11.5 hours of run time. Apparently part of the reason the touchscreen models weigh more is that they have larger batteries.
