LG is expected to start mass production of a new type of flexible display this summer. The folks at OLED Display.net report the new plastic OLED
screens lighting panels can bend further than existing solutions.
Update: LG’s new technology applies to lighting panels, not the screens you find on phones or tablets. It could be a while before we see this sort of technology make its way to mobile devices.
Does that mean we’ll finally start to see smartphones and tablets that you can roll up and put in your pocket? Probably not. But it does pave the way for devices with unusual shapes and shatter-proof screens.
displays panels are said to be made entirely of plastic, so there’s no glass material to break. At the same time, LG says the new plastic screens panels offer the kind of brightness, energy efficient, and color you’d expect from glass displays.
LG is currently providing engineering samples to partners and mass production could begin in July.
That means we could start to see devices from LG and other companies featuring the new technology later this year.
