Intel launches Broadwell-powered NUC mini-desktop computers

01/05/2015 at 7:00 PM by Brad Linder 13 Comments

Gigabyte isn’t the only company adding Broadwell chips to its tiny desktop computers. Intel is updating its own line of NUC mini-desktops with new models sporting 5th-generation Intel Core processors.

intel nuc

Some of the first models include the NUC5i3RYH and NUC5i3RYK with Intel Core i3-5010U processors and Intel HD 5500 graphics, Mini DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, four USB 3.0 ports, and support for up to 16GB of RAM.

The only difference between the two is that the RYH model has room for a 2.5 inch hard drive, while the RYK is a more compact model with just enough space for an M.2 SSD.

Intel also offers the NUC5i5RYH and NUC5i5RYK, which feature Intel Core i5-5250U processors and Intel HD 6000 graphics. Most of the other specs for these models are the same as for the Core i3 versions.

Does the RYH model take an m2 ssd as well as a 2.5 inch drive?

yes, basically they have identical boards in every way, just that the case for the RYH is deeper and has a mounting bracket for a 2,5″ drive, while the power and SATA connector are wasted due to lack of space in the RYK

I’m not sure. The spec on Intels site specificially says an m.2 ssd OR a 2.5″ drive. I would also like to know if you can put both in.

These NUCs should be fanless by default. What a missed opportunity.

If you want to settle for a CPU low-wattage enough to be fanless, there are plenty out there.

The Zotac Zbox C-series are all fanless. Baytrail Celeron. i3, and i5 are Y-series Haswell chips (ultra low wattage), not nearly as powerful as these CPUs.

I’m glad to see this but I noticed the last time new models were introduced it took forever for them to hit Amazon. Hopefully, it will go quicker this time.

Also, just to confirm: the new models now include Wifi? So you need to buy just storage and RAM?

Nuc with atoms and 2.5 inch hard drives? I need a computer with the less power consumption as possible, i only i need these computer to install virtualdj in a pubbardiscotheque. One atom with a 256-500 gb hard disk will be perfect solution.

5 W tdp for a single core is too much, at least 2 core. Nuc with 4.5 W tdp or less and 2 cores and 2.5 hdd.

I wish they’d release one with 2 NICs, would make for a super router.
