Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop app for the Chrome web browser lets you remote control another PC with the browser (and app) running. But up until recently you’ve only been able to use it to remote control a Windows or Mac computer.

Now you can remotely login into a Chromebook as well.

You’ve always been able to use a Chromebook to connect to a different computer. What’s new is that now you can connect to a Chromebook from another Chromebook… or Mac… or Windows PC… or mobile device with the Chrome Remote Desktop app for Android or iOS.

At launch you’ll need a Chromebook or Chromebox running the Chrome OS dev channel to enable remote logins. But many features like this that make their way to the dev channel first eventually graduate to the beta and stable channels.

I don’t have a Chromebook handy at the moment to test the new remote desktop functionality, but Mark Dodsworth shared a video of the feature in action with Chrome Story.

  1. I love my Chromebook, but I don’t want ANYBODY controlling it. That’s the whole point of using a Chromebook instead of a Windows machine.

    1. Penguin, In order to allow remote desktop support just like in the real IT world its not an always on feature. You need to allow the feature via a unique token. That token even expires after said number of minutes. I have used the feature to fix my mom’s PC from IL to FL and now that she has a chromebook I can do the same. I love this feature. Its all about features you implement on any OS to maintain control of your own computer. Or you can live in fear and use a locked up password protected Chromebook. I have and use also Chrome OS dual booted with Ubuntu XFCE4 and also have a mac air and acer laptop as well so I enjoy all of them.

  2. Brilliant!
ChromeOS makes a great OS for that less than computer super-user parent or grandparent. Or anyone else for that matter. Much lighter maintenance hassles than more traditional systems. However up to now it has been impossible for somebody to help with what maintenance their might be via a remote desktop application. Particularly useful if you don’t live locally to the person you are trying to help.

Still – I’d wait for this to hit stable rather than move Dad or Grandma or Aunt Ruth onto the Dev channel.

    1. I wonder how long it would take to migrate to that stable channel? I’d also rather wait.

    2. You are right on! I am migrating my parents and inlaws to Chrome as we speak and this feature will make it even better!
