As expected, Yota has unveiled its latest dual-screen smartphone. The Yotaphone 2 features a 5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel AMOLED display on one side. But flip the phone over and you’ll find a 4.7 inch, 960 x 540 pixel always-on ePaper display.

You can use a wallpaper on that second screen to customize the look of the “back” of your phone. Or you can use it to read eBooks, view notifications, or perform other tasks that might not require a power-hungry, full-color display.

The Yotaphone 2 should be available for purchase soon in parts of Europe and Asia as well as the United Arab Emirates. There don’t appear to be any plans for a US launch at this time.

Both of the phone’s displays feature capacitive touchscreens so you can interact with them using your fingertips.

Other features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and auto-focus, and a 2.1MP front-facing camera. The phone supports 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and 4G LTE and it has a 2500mAh battery.

In other words, the hardware hasn’t really changed since Yota started showing off a prototype in February.

The Yotaphone 2 should begin shipping this month. You can sign up to receive more information when it’s available at the Yotaphone website.

Update: The phone will reportedly sell for about $620 in Russia and should be available in Russia and Europe this week. Sputnik News reports it’ll also be available in Canada and Latin America in 2015, but there’s no word on US availability.

Update 2: Engadget has posted a detailed review of the Yotaphone 2, and reports that the new phone has a YotaMirror feature that lets you use the ePaper display to experience the full Android user interface. That means any app that runs on the color screen can also run on the ePaper screen: but apps that require a high screen refresh rate will wear down the battery quickly.

  1. I’d really like to see someone make a E-Paper Smartphone that is focused on simplicity and battery life. Just use a screen similar to the new kindle and make a Android skin that works better with a low re-fresh rate. Your data usage would be super low!

  2. Can the ePaper screen be used like the main front screen or is it limited to only certain functions? For example, when long battery life is required, you can turn off the color screen and just use the ePaper one.

  3. That’s a really nice looking phone. I usually don’t get hyped about having the latest and greatest phone, but this does seem to catch my interest.
