Chinese device maker Xiaomi has branched out beyond smartphones recently, offering fitness trackers, televisions, gaming accessories, and even a blood pressure monitor.

Now there are reports that the first Xiaomi laptop may be on the way.

Update: While there are rumors that a Xiaomi notebook is under development, the company denies that the photo making the rounds is a picture of a Xiaomi product.

Rumors about a Xiaomi notebook have actually been circulating for a while, but now the first pictures have allegedly hit the web.

It’s not clear if these pictures are legit… but they seem to show a laptop that borrows its design cues from Apple’s MacBook Air (which seems about right, since Xiaomi phones are often considered to be iPhone clones).

According to GizmoChina, the Xiaomi laptop will have a 15 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, an Intel Core i7 Haswell processor, 16GB of RAM, and a Chinese price tag of under $500.

Sound too good to be true? It probably is. Xiaomi has a reputation for offering high-quality hardware at affordable prices, but if this device even exists, I suspect someone misread a spec sheet somewhere and quoted an entry-level price as well as the maxed out specs for a laptop. It seems more likely that the $500 model would have a slower processor and less RAM while Xiaomi could offer a higher-end version with top-tier hardware.

As GSM Arena points out, the pictures look a lot like an existing notebook reference design… so much so that someone might have just Photoshopped the Xiaomi logo on existing pictures. So take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Incidentally, Xiaomi’s president Bin Lin has announced that the company will be unveiling its next “flagship device” in January. It’s not clear if that will be a phone, tablet, laptop, or something else.

  2. niceee…… I’ll totally buy one if it’s real. I want powerful i7, not ULV model.

  3. lol ppl need to stop publishing fake news about a Xiaomi laptop every week, it’s getting really old.

  4. Those evil, shameless Chinese even know how to do honest business? I’m worried that those communist lunatics might someday copy our faces and our language.

    1. Those damn communists, always promoting competition in the free market! How dare they offer consumers choice and threaten Apple’s monopoly on the design of thin, silver laptops with rounded corners and black keys! We need to protect our God-given all-American freedoms to use lawyers and our government to keep tight controls on the market!

    2. That’s good and all, but I think that Xiaomi is a bit over it’s head right now. Their most widely used phone, the Hongmi 1S still uses the MIUIv5 based on Android 4.3. The older MT-based Hongmi 1 is on 4.2.2. The Chinese ROM has just been pushed back to 2015 march. Again, that is their main product, one of the most widely used phone in China. Clearly, they don’t have enough developers, if they can’t support their best selling product. The official MIUI v6 for the Mi2/s is still in early beta. Meanwhile the development for the V5 ROM is finished. They couldn’t build a stable 4.4 ROM in 6 months, but they plan to move to Android 5 in 30 days. What would you expect from such a rushed ROM? And besides all of this, they have the Mi-Band, their TV and router to support, and the Mi3, 4, Mi2A, Note, and many of these has a WDCMA variant too. They can’t keep up as it is. Now imagine a notebook to the mix. Drivers, BIOS-upgrades (and remember, this is new territory for them, there is a learning curve), custom software they plan to make it profitable (probably an application store and themes, as usual). Nope, they can’t afford a notebook right now, this won’t happen.

      1. with the 1.1 billion they got (today?) from investors, they can afford to hire a ton more people.

    3. they no comunist at all, come to china and you will see it … or maybe you miss use that word.

Anyway if we agree to buy and Iphone 6 at +600$ that cost 200$ to be built … built by chinese maybe with very limited right … that we like and that is moral … if they copy a design they are evil and immoral right ?
