It’s not hard to find Windows 8.1 tablets that sell for $100 or less these days. But that doesn’t mean there’s not still room for improvement.

Most of the sub-$100 Windows tablets available in the US (such as the WinBook TW800, Vulcan Challenger II, and Toshiba Encore Mini) feature just 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. But Chinese device maker Vido’s latest tablet sports 2GB of memory and 32GB of storage and still manages to maintain a list price of 599 yuan, or about $97.

vido w8c

The Vido W8C features an 8 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display, an Intel Atom Z3735F quad-core Bay Trail processor, a 4200mAh battery, a microSD card slot, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

It also has HDMI output, 2MP front and rear cameras, and it comes with a 1-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365.

The tablet measures 0.36 inches thick and weighs about 10 ounces.

Vido’s tablets aren’t typically sold in US stores, but don’t be surprised if you see this model at AliExpress or other international retail channels soon. If we’re lucky the tablet and others like it could also put pressure on the competition which could either push 1GB/16GB tablets out of the market or at least drive their prices down even lower.

Of course if you don’t want to wait that long, there’s always the HP Stream 7. It’s a 7 inch Windows tablet with $100 price tag, a Bay Trail processor, and 32GB of storage. But it only has 1GB of RAM.

  1. This thing looks promising and I like the 8 inch form factor. Nice portable Windows pc. They should just drop the rear camera and lower the price or add more memory instead…

  2. must be the Vido Corleone model..its 205 clams plus shipping..thats a big “no go”,,so much for 97 dollars…see ya…

  3. $119 usd chuwi vi8 is available at pandawill with 2gb ram 32gb emmc.

  4. The Chuwi vi8 was supposed to be $82, and now it’s out for around $120. The Chinese have a tendency to hype these for retail, at what turns out to be wholesale prices.

  5. I wonder what’s the extra $$$ to go from 1 gb to 2 gb. I have a 10″ with the identical specs as this and having more than 3 browser tabs already stress the system. I can’t imagine how bad it would be with just 1 gb of ram.

    1. Realy? I have never had any problem with multiple browser tabs open in Chrome- and that is prety RAM intensive. I guess it depends on what you have in your tabs.

Obviously, these 8″ tablets should not be expected to fully a replace a laptop or desktop. Windows 8 metro definitely is inelegant and limited as compared to IOS or Android, but the ability to run full desktop Windows apps makes up for it IMO. And installing TouchMousePointer allows you to use desktop apps reasonably well.

No doubt that for most people an Android or IPAD is an easier to use option. But a Windows tab brings some unique things to the table- especial considering the price.

      1. can never go back to android tablets. would never even bother with ios toys in the first place

i also dont know why you say modern windows is inelegant. way better than your other two options with the live tiles and multitasking

        1. The modern browser has issues and there are not many alternatives like you would have with Android (Chrome, Dolphin, Maxthon etc.) And running a desktop browser on a tablet is clunky. Chrome has a win8 mode, but it does not work well. Also, nothing like Google Now or nice integration into the Google ecosystem, so you have to rely on 3rd party workarounds.

I use Windows phone, which is in some ways a smoother experience than Win 8 metro- especially with regards to 3rd party apps. Probably will be much better in a year with Win10.

That said, the Baytrail SOC is fantastic in terms of smooth operation and battery saving.

          1. there’s not much to disagree with here, but i have found the modern browser is as issue laden as any android browser..ie not bad. ive been using desktop firefox with ghostery, disconnect, adblock, downloadhelper etc on a little 7 incher and managed just fine without any peripherals

the biggest benefit for me is hdmi and bluetooth into desktop setup and portable use on the go.

for movies, music, books, comics it does what i need. as for google now i hardly use it on my phone anyway but cortana in win 10 should make things interesting

            thanks for your testing

    2. Huh. I use my DV8P all the time, sometimes for heavy office work with an external screen and keyboard-mouse combo (when I decide to bike to the office I only pack the tablet). Usually it runs Spotify, desktop Chrome with 8-10 tabs, excel, and maybe utorrent in the background. And it’s pretty smooth.

      1. Depend on which tabs you have open. I visits very media heavy site or very text heavy site with 1000+ forum post. Those eat up ram like crazy.

        1. Yup, memory is full. But I don’t care as long as I can work without a hiccup. And what you see on the picture bellow is smooth. Been working like this all day long.

  6. 10 oz for an 8 inch windows tablet is really nice and light. Especially considering the included HDMI port.

If Console OS ever figures out how to handle a 32 bit UEFI to get this running Android alongside Windows, then this would be an amazing value. Even without Android, my VP8 with simalar specs is pretty useful.

      1. I have not had a great experience with Bluestacks and my VP8. Slow loading, uses several GB of space, and does not work with the apps I want (like apps that cast to a Chromecast.)

        1. thanks, i havent tried it on my 32gb linx 7 tab yet, i havent really had a need, but your real life experience makes it sound a bit sucky

          1. It probably depends on what apps you need. But I don’t have much free space on my tablet, so it was not worth giving up 2 GB for Bluestacks.

          2. apart from games very few tbh, asphalt 8 and proper dosbox (use dosbox turbo for android) is on windows, so it’s just guardians of the sky (air force game) that I will try to run for fun

i’m actually still amazed that i managed to fit a full windows PC in my jeans and can take it wherever

i definitely have 2gb space free so should be ok, but i only have 1gb ram so let’s see. i’ll also try running it on the microsd card and see where i end up

        1. cool, im going to try it in the evening…what apps should i try?
