Japanese laptop maker Vaio used to be a division of Sony before it was spun off, leaving Sony to focus on smartphones, tablets, TVs, gaming consoles and other devices.

But now Vaio is getting ready to expand beyond personal computers. The company plans to launch its first smartphones in early 2015. Like Vaio laptops, they’ll only be available in Japan, at least initially.

Vaio’s first phone is coming through a partnership with Japan Communications, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that offers low-cost wireless service.

Few other details are available at the moment, but according to The Japan Times, Vaio’s new phones will run Google Android software and they’re expected to be mid-range devices that could launch in January.

In other words, don’t expect Vaio’s new phones to rival Sony’s premium smartphones such as the Xperia Z3 or upcoming Xperia Z4 just yet.
