Chinese device maker Huawei’s latest processor is a 64-bit, 8-core chip called the Kirin 620. The octa-core chip is based on ARM’s CortexA-53 architecture and it’s aimed at mid-range phones, tablets, and other devices.

The processor also supports 4G LTE cat 4 with speeds up to 150 Mbps.

The Kirin 620 chip features ARM Mali-450 graphics, 1.2 GHz CPU cores, LPDDR3 memory, and supports 13MP cameras, HDR photography, and 1080p HD video encoding and decoding.

It’s likely that we’ll see Kirin 620 processors in Huawei smartphones or tablets next year, but it’s not clear if any other device makers plan to use the processor.

ARM’s Cortex-A53 designs are aimed at mid-range devices, while the company’s higher-performance Cortex-A57 architecture will likely power higher-end phones and tablets.

Even so, the Kirin 620 looks like a relatively light-weight entry: with a 1.2 GHz clock speed, it’ll go head-to-head with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410 processor rather than the faster Snapdragon 610 and 615 chips which offer speeds up to 1.7 GHz or MediaTek’s MT6795 processor which tops out at 2.2 GHz.

  1. I understand the Huawei chipset/processor isn’t very energy efficient. Their phones need bigger batteries just to have the same run time as the competition.

  2. mail 450 still? Common Huawei. Even Allwinner and Rockchip moved on from that already.

  3. I actually received in the mail, just two days ago, a free pair of Huawei headphones as a runner-up prize for liking their page on Facebook. It was a sure surprise, seeing that they didn’t contact me to let me know that I won anything!

I just thought that I’d share this information, since the article is regarding Huawei.

  4. There is a huge difference between Snapdragon 615 and Mediatek 6752 and above. The 615 has 2 quad clusters that don’t seem to be able to work at the same time and even if they did the second cluster is low clocks. So the 615 is a quad core with the second quad cluster mostly for marketing and to save a bit of power.
On this Kirin 620 the GPU used is also surprising
