The Google Play Store recently stopped selling red and white Nexus 5 smartphones. Soon the black model could disappear as well.
TechRadar reports that production of Google’s 5 inch Nexus smartphone has ceased. That means once the remaining inventory is gone, it won’t be replaced.
The Google Nexus 5 features a 5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, an up to 32GB of storage. It was released in 2013, but Google continued to sell the phone after introducing this year’s Nexus 6.
That was good news for folks who thought the Nexus 6 was too big (because of its 6 inch display) or too expensive (because of its $649 starting price). Last year’s phone sells for just over half the price and is a much easier to slide into your pants pocket.
It’s likely that you’ll still be able to pick up a Nexus 5 from third-party stores such as Expansys or Amazon for a while, and there’ll probably be used or refurbished models available for years. But if the Google spokesperson who talked to TechRadar is correct, folks hoping for a low-cost Nexus smartphone might not have much longer to get their hands on a brand new model.
Update: Gizmodo got a slightly different statement from Google, confirming that the Nexus 5 will “continue to be available… in Q1 2015,” although the company is making not promises March, 2015 at this point.
I’m waiting for official word from Google on this before I believe it.
This is why people should listen to me… (joking of course)
get a Moto G or Moto X. almost a clean version of Android
Watch LG’s sales numbers after Q1, they’ll drop out of top 10 unless they change strategy.
Love my Nexus 5. I have no idea why they wouldn’t offer a 5″ option in the future.
Between this and the 7, it makes me wonder if it is only these specific models that are going away. Do they really think 5″ phones and 7″ tablets aren’t in demand? I wonder if there will be a new version (5.1? 7.1?) or even a different brand name from the Nexus within the next year.
Glad I bought Oneplus One
wish Oneplus One had compatibility for Sprint/Verizon
I do not like them, they only now started using sim cards for lte. They want to be in control of what phones you buy while att and tmobile can care less
Sometimes you just need to call out
This is seriously disappointing. The 6 IS too expensive and the 4 is too small. Without the 5, as far as I am concerned, there is no nexus phone that exists.
lol I thought the Nexus 5 was to expensive my jaw dropped when I saw the price on the Nexus 6… i’d buy a phone with support for all 4 carriers if it was really gonna matter this time next year after Project Ara
I noticed just yesterday that the Nexus 7 is no longer in the Play Store.
Yeah, they pulled that from the store when they started selling the Nexus 9. But the Nexus 5 remained for a while.
How very Apple of them. 😉
Wow, no kidding. When they unveiled the pricing of the 6 and 9, they were definitely mimicking Apple’s pricing model, but this is like they’re trying to scrub the existence of low-cost, high-performance Nexus items from history, 1984 style. “No, you could never buy a quality Nexus tablet for around $200. You’ve been lied to. Phones marketed as flagship devices always go for $650. Whoever told you that you could get a solid device for $350 was a big fat liar. That could never happen. (Jedi hand wave) We have always sold our devices at these price points.”
I am not liking Google new direction, wish they refreshed the N5 instead of canning them! Will not be buying either N6 or the N9 both are over priced.
