The Asus EeeBook X205TA is an inexpensive Windows laptop with an 11.6 inch display, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. It normally sells for $200, but over the past few weeks it’s been on sale for even lower prices so often that I’m getting kind of tired of featuring it in our roundups of mobile tech deals.

But that won’t stop me from doing it at least one more time — because Best Buy is currently selling the little laptop for half price. You can pick one up for just $100.

The only catch is that Best Buy won’t ship the laptop. You’ll have to opt for in-store pickup. Still, this is the best price we’ve seen on the X205TA (or any Windows laptop, really) since Black Friday.

  1. I just checked the Best Buy Site and it says Shipping: Not available. Store Pickup: Not available. That sort of limits my options 🙂

  2. I finally picked up my $99 X205 from Staples. It’s awesome! Especially for the price.

  3. Honestly – that $230 Refurb T100TA was the better deal. The X205TA is really just a bigger Winbook TW801 with no touch and a keyboard/touchpad. It have no upgradeability, and you’ll be stuck with a 32 Bit UEFI tablet derived machine…but minus the tablet sizing or flexibility. Not ideal.

  4. This $99 X205 deal seems to be bogus. It is “unavailable” in every Best Buy location I tried to chose for in-store pickup I could find.

    1. The Best Buy webpage isn’t showing anything at all for my zip code search: no stores, no status, nada. The link page says its not available online or for store pickup without referencing location. At least Chromebook specials aren’t a bunch of Black Fridayesque nonsense. Typing on the C710 right now, the X205 continues to sit in the box.

    2. Well, at least their persistent. They sent me an email last night asking me to complete my checkout, even though I had deleted it from my account. Checking this morning, still no inventory in stock.

      1. They just did the same thing to me. They also sent me a survey asking how my order went.

    3. just show the add to walmart and they will price match! wasnt there an article right before black friday about how all of walmart is now price matching with major retailers including Amazon..

  5. Brad: If it’s any consolation, the never ending sales are even more annoying across the other side of the Atlantic where we have yet to see the X205TA offered for less than $250 – and that was a discounted price.

  6. Thats a fantastic deal. I wonder how they(best buy) make money at all on this thing. I don’t think ASUS will be giving away this for $99.
What is the advantage for bestbuy to sell it for $99 when they might be getting it for $149 or more? People may buy other things when they come to store to pick this up but it really worth losing $50 or more for BB to lose for each one of these?

    Can someone enlighten me?

    1. I’m wondering the same thing. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, because I like to wait a few months to see if there is any glaring issue with this (just like a new car) and because I’m hoping other colors (white, red) become available. But I am really amazed at the sales on this item … and the generally very good reviews it tends to get.

      1. Nice unit – thin, light and fast. Main weakness is the screen – the colors are not great and the screen washes out quickly.

        1. The display is one of it’s best points. The bright, vibrant colors are superior to the Stream laptops. =)

        2. I haven’t tried it in sunlight, but watching a movie using the Netflix Win8 app I was very impressed with the image.

          1. can also do light gaming, i’ve been playing “this war of mine” runs pretty smooth.. with its awesome battery life and surprisingly awesome keyboard, the asus x205 has totally replaced my iPad (3rd gen)

    2. Well, I could buy a DVI to HDMI adaptor. Do they charge $40 for those? 😉

    3. They get you in store and you may end up buying other things there. A case, a micro sd card, office, a tv??!

    4. I’m sure Best Buy isn’t buying these from the manufacturer. They are probably selling them on consignment.

It was something I was unaware of until HP announced the firesale of the HP Touchpad. Best Buy publicly announced (probably for the benefit of their investors) that they were not taking the cost hit on this price cut, and that HP sells their products through Best Buy on a consignment basis.
