Minix has launched a new TV box which lets you run Android apps, stream 4K video, and surf the web over WiFi or Ethernet on your TV.

The Minix Neo X8-H Plus is now available for about $160. That makes it one of the more expensive Android-powered TV boxes on the market. But it’s also one of the most powerful devices of its type.

The Neo X8-H Plus features a 2 GHz Amlogic S812 ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core processor with Mali 450 graphics, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage.

It also has 802.11ac WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0, and support for H.265/HEVC video playback at resolutions up to 4K.

You can connect the box to your TV with an HDMI cable, and it has a 3.5mm mic and headphone/speaker jacks as well as optical S/PDIF output, an IR receiver, a microSD card reader,  3 USB 2.0 ports, and a micro USB port along with a separate power jack.

It also comes with an infrared remote control and features an external antenna.

The box runs Android 4.4 KitKat rather than Google’s new Android TV software. That means you’ll be able to run more apps on the Minix Neo X8-H Plus than you can on a device like the Google Nexus Player… but there’s a chance that some of those apps will be tough to use with the included remote.

Update: It looks like the device actually comes with two remotes: a standard IR remote control a second model with air mouse functionality.

Geekbuying and Gearbest are both selling the Minix Neo X8-H Plus for about $160.

  1. Well, I just bought a Minix Neo X8-H a month and a half ago and I’m not exactly sure what’s different in the “Plus” version, according to these specifications,[s] other than a MicroSD card slot replacing the standard SD card slot that is built-in to mine, which, by the way, I was disappointed about because I had to purchase a MicroSD-to-SD adapter card to use my existing MicroSD card in it[/s]. Anyway, the purpose of this comment is to address the fact that I spent $195 before taxes on the regular Minix Neo X8-H, so I find it strange that a new version would cost $30 less.

EDIT: It turns out that the author has incorrectly listed a MicroSD card slot, as one of the images in the article actually shows that the slot is labelled for use with a full-size SD card. Also, the images have revealed to me that a nicer looking infra red remote with more buttons is included, as opposed to the similar one included with mine. The M1 Air Mouse, though, came with mine anyway, so the nicer looking infra red remote wouldn’t really be a benefit to choosing this over the other; there’s very little functionality without an air mouse or mouse, since a remote with just arrows literally cannot select some menus.

  2. thumbs up for 802.11ac and an antenna, but thumbs down for lack of Intel/Windows 8 option.

    1. I’ve contacted Minix regarding the availability of the Minix Z64 with Windows 8. They are not going to make it.

  3. Funny, the original S802 from Minix was advertised with the same specs.. but apparently this one will be able to function as the original was advertised as such. ie h.265 4k… yadda yadda

  4. Did amlogic… anything suddenly become something to desire? When did this occur?
Was Allwinner not available or something?

    1. There are some allwinner A80. Octa core tv box. MK80–RIKOMAGIC, AW80–TRANSMART,,

  5. “but interestingly the photos at Gearbest seem to show two different remote control models.” maybe they don’t know what is the real remote control? lol, the Neo x8-h plus will come with two controller, one is the IR remote control, which should be the same as the one in Neo x6 package, the other is the FREE M1 AIR MOUSE. Just make it clearly for everyone.
