Hewlett Packard may be getting ready to split into two companies. No, they won’t be called Hewlett and Packard… at least I don’t think they will.

Instead, the Wall Street Journal reports one business will focus on personal computers and printers while the other will focus on services and hardware for enterprise customers.

Update: Yup, it’s official. HP is breaking up the band… and starting two new ones.

HP’s been thinking about such a split for a few years. The company had been planning to spin off its PC division in 2011, but eventually decided against the move… for a while.

At the time, HP had just acquired enterprise software company Autonomy. But that deal wound up being much more problematic than anticipated. CEO Leo Apotheker left the company following that acquisition (and the largely failed acquisition of Palm), and Meg Whitman took over as CEO of the company.

Now the Wall Street Journal reports Whitman would stay on as CEO of the new enterprise company and chair of the PC and printer company, while HP vice president Dion Weisler would take over as CEO of the PC division.

  1. soon HP will take their place amongst electronic greats such as Coby, Craig, and Westinghouse because their android tablet offerings have been so weak.

  2. What a mess.
Good luck with the long climb back into credibility.

  3. No doubt an excuse to mess around with pensions yet again. Glad I’ve never wasted any more time than opening the various pension-related communications I’ve had since leaving EDS (subsumed into HP), because every single time there’s been a major reorganisation within months rendering it all obsolete.

  4. Meg is doing a great job. I hope that business PCs fall under the enterprise group, as the low-cost PCs reputation is extremely poor. I mean how can you market your well designed hardware with white box crap? I really like HP business printers and PCs… have owned them for years, never once had an issue. Dion Weisler is a bad choice… they need a Chinese VP to run the PC group.

  5. I hope this works out for HP. They haven’t been doing well since the Apotheker debacle. I hope they keep the names of the new companies similar. Like HPES (HP Enterprise Solultions) and Hewlett-Packard for consumers. They could resurrect the Compaq brand for the consumer company. It still has some brand recognition.
