Say you’re the guy who runs the largest retail website in the United States… which also happens to make and sell a line of eReaders and tablets. And say you also happened to buy a major newspaper a little while ago? Maybe you’d find some synergies in an effort to help make the newspaper profitable (something that’s increasingly difficult to do these days)?

OK, let’s skip the hypotheticals. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos did buy the Washington Post about a year ago for $250 million. Now he’s reportedly planning to install a Washington Post app on the new Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 that will begin shipping to customers soon.

It’ll be free to use on that tablet, but you’ll need a subscription to use a similar app once it’s released for other Kindle, Android, and Apple tablets in the future.
