Over the last few years smartphone makers have taken big steps to help you take better photos using the cameras on the back of their phones. More recently they’ve started tackling the front-facing cameras.

Front cameras can be used for video calls… or for the popular but much-maligned “selfie.”

HTC’s next selfie-friendly phone could be a model called the HTC Desire Eye.

The phone maker is holding an event this week, and while HTC hasn’t actually said what it’ll announce yet, a teaser video suggests cameras will be involved. In September some photos of a device called the RECamera were leaked, showing what looks like a small action camera that you can pair with a phone.

Now @upleaks and HTCFamily.ru have leaked some pictures of a new phone called the HTC Desire Eye.

The phone is said to feature a 5.2 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 2400mAh battery.

But the most unusual characteristics might be the cameras. The phone had a 13MP camera on the back, and another on the front. Both the front and rear cameras have LED flash bulbs. THere’s also a dedicated camera button on the side of the device for snapping photos without touching the screen.

The HTC Desire Eye is also reportedly IPX7 water resistant and has a removable battery.

HTC’s new phone would hardly be the first selfie-centric device we’ve seen in recent years. The Sony Xperia C3 has a 5MP wide-angle front camera and LED flash. The Nokia Lumia 730 has a 5MP wide-angle front camera for selfie-shooting. And Acer’s got a hat with a built-in tablet holder for snapping photos of yourself. I’m told it has something to do with fashion.

Other companies such as Oppo have decided to just include a single high-quality camera on their phones and allow you to rotate it to face the front or back. That seems like a more economical solution than including two high-quality cameras. But the mechanical hinge on the Oppo N1 gives the phone one more part that could break.

  1. This is actually goes beyond simple vanity and into actually having practicality. The front facing flash means not only night selfies but night video chats without having to turn on all the lights in the house. This is good for people like me who prefer softer low-wattage lights like me (I can see perfectly in that light but cameras not so much.

Also good for not having to get out of bed to take a personal video call (it doesn’t matter what time it is, business associates should never see you in your jammies, much less in bed, friends and family can be much more understanding).

Down side, accidentally showing someone just how much ear wax build-up you have…and the loss of front facing speakers (whivh are a good thing for video chats).

  2. give it powerful always enabled xenon flash for the front camera so that people literally blinded by selfies
