Like the convenience of storing your photos, music, or videos online so you can access them from any phone or computer… but don’t like the idea of giving your files and data to Google, Apple, or Facebook? A startup called Eggcyte has developed a personal web server they’re calling the Egg.
It’s a small device with an Intel Atom processor, a Tizen Linux-based operating system, up to 256GB of storage, and up to 12 hours of battery life.
You can use it to automatically backup files from your phone or copy files from your PC and access them over the internet from any device.
Eggcyte is running a Kickstarter campaign to raise $500,000 to begin producing the Egg and hopes to begin shipping devices in July, 2015.
A limited number of early backers of the project can reserve a 64GB model for $199. The team is offering an unlimited number of models with 128GB of storage or more for $299 and up.
The Egg features a 2.4 inch, 320 x 240 pixel color TFT touchscreen display, 1GB of RAM, a speaker and vibration motor for notifications, an accelerometer, compass, ambient light sensor, and a 910mAh battery. It connects tot he internet over 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and also supports Bluetooth 4.0.
You can use the device itself to find media that you want to share over the internet, or you can access you content through a personal domain such as mydomain.eggcyte.com. Just turn on the Egg and your content is available on the internet. Turn it off and it’s not — and you get to decide who can access your photos, videos, and other files.
The Egg is hardly the first personal cloud server. Pogoplug offers a line of personal cloud server and backup devices with list prices starting at just $50 (and sale prices that are often much lower). But Pogoplug devices aren’t portable. They don’t have batteries or touchscreen, or storage. You need to connect a USB drive for storage and an Ethernet cable for internet access.

What about using a usb stick with a micro usb to usb adaptor? They are smaller, cheaper and you don’t need to charge them…. A sdcard world also work….
This could mean another device inside your pocket… So what happens when mobile companies copy the same technology in phones?
How about an old smartphone with a microSD card and bittorrent sync? More functionality and if you have an old smartphone, no cost!
I use rsync on my cellphone that kicks-off at 2am every night. Mirrors photos and videos from the phone to the server, and mirrors mp3s from the server to the phone. I have a httpss server at home that will provide links to all files on it (has a php script that runs a linux find command to provide the link). I eventually want to have my phone on my VPN for privacy, but other projects have higher priority.
I’ll stick to my Synology NAS…

Wow, 500,000 seems a bit of a stretch for offering something that can already be done for free, without going through any of the big name clouds.
