Microsoft lets anyone get up to 15GB of free cloud storage when they register for the company’s OneDrive service. But through the end of September you can double that amount for no extra charge.

When you install the OneDrive app for iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows and enable the camera roll function to automatically backup your photos you’ll see your storage limit jump to 30GB.

The promotion runs through the end of September. After that you’ll have to pay if you want more than 15GB of storage space, but if you enable the camera roll feature before then you’ll get to keep the extra storage space indefinitely.

Existing OneDrive users just need to enable the Camera Roll feature if it’s not already enabled. If it is, they should see their storage space increase automatically.

Microsoft is running this promotion to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 6 and release of iOS 8.

What’s Apple’s new operating system have to do with Microsoft’s cloud storage service? Many iPhone and iPad owners are finding that they don’t have enough free space on their devices to download and install iOS 8, which requires up to 7GB of free space.

OneDrive (or other cloud storage services) can let you free up space on your device by backing up your photos or other content to the cloud. At least that’s the idea.

You could also use iCloud, Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, or other cloud storage services — but by offering 30GB of online storage space for free, Microsoft is currently giving away more free storage than most of its US-based competitors. It’s tough to compete with Chinese companies which offer up to 10TB for free though.

  1. wanted to note, originally had the 25gb from a while back. Doing this bumped my storage to 40gb!

  2. If you want to play with my files, you’ll first have to show us some Linux support.

  3. Hasn’t anyone heard of BittorrentSync? I don’t trust any of the “cloud” storage providers except myself. Not only is the government all into your files, so are the hackers. There is a reason the EULAs from all these cloud storage providers basically say “we are not responsible for your stuff”.

  4. Only a fool would allow their photos to be backed up automatically….MS is making money off of this by being part of illegal government surveillance and spying.

    1. Yeah those pictures of your vacation are being poured over right now by the NSA.

      1. Snowden did claim that the creepers at the NSA saw looking at people’s private photos as a “fringe benefit” of being an employee. Good thing all my photos are boring though.

        1. Sure, that’s going to happen when NSA personnel come across photos in the course of their work (it’s human nature), but the idea that the NSA is trawling through millions of private photos just for kicks is nonsense.

And as the recent celebrity-related leaks show, people have far more to worry about from hackers and unscrupulous employees than the NSA when it comes to the privacy of their photos and videos.

    2. Only a complete fool would be paranoid enough to think that the NSA is interested enough in billions of selfies and holiday snaps that they would actually pay anyone for access.

    1. I am not a great MS fan either, but onedrive is surely the best on the market.

        1. A fairly recent Nasuni report claimed to have concluded that MS is winning the cloud wars, specifically dethroning the old guard of Amazon S3.

Mind, MS has made a lot of improvements to their services and they’re now pretty comparable to the other top offerings but they’re also leveraging their entire cloud services and even their regular apps and OS… Giving many companies a incentive to choose them…

So, it’s more like edging out the others than clearly the best but competition is good right now as they’re all slowly offering their users more and better deals for extra storage… which hopefully, will continue for a long time…
No matter which one you choose or even if you choose to use multiple services…

After all, you can get a lot of free capacity by using multiple services and just put a little extra effort in managing them…

        2. Amazon S3 is a business solution, while onedrive is consumer one.

          1. Ya, but why do you think OneDrive is better than the other consumer ones. That was the question.
