Smartphone maker HTC’s next device might not be a phone at all. The company is holding an event on October 8th to launch a new product, and the “Double Exposure” event invitations hint at something photo-centric.
Now the company has released a teaser video showing a series of action clips, suggesting the new camera could be a GoPro-style rugged camera for shooting 1st-person sports videos, underwater videos, and more.
Reddit users have also filled in some of the blanks by digging up a website, some pictures, and a Twitter account for something called a RE Camera.
The RE Camera appears to be a small periscope-style camera with a little tube that curves so you can position the camera at a variety of angles. You can clip it to your clothing to shoot first-person video or hold it in your hands with the camera facing you or away.
A tweet from the RE Camera also suggests that it could help get the photographer out from “behind the camera, framing the scene,” suggesting that it could be designed to help you shoot photos and videos without looking at the world through a viewfinder.
It’s not clear if the Re Camera is designed to work with HTC smartphones or if it’s a standalone device… but the original invitation for the Double Exposure event show two people looking at a smartphone display… so there’s that.
