Plenty of companies offer fitness tracking features in their smartwatches. You can measure your heart rate or keep track of your steps with a Samsung Gear, for example.
Garmin’s taking things in a different direction with its new Vivosmart. It’s an activity tracker first and foremost… but it can also display notifications from your smartphone.
The Garmin Vivosmart has a touchscreen display that can show your step count, calories burned, goal countdown, and other fitness-related data.
But the device can also vibrate to let you know when you’ve got a new phone call, text message, email, or calendar reminder. You can wake the screen to read more data by swiping your finger across the display. There’s also an alarm clock that can vibrate to wake you without beeping.
The device is waterproof, offers up to 7 days of battery life, and has an OLED display that’s “hidden” when it’s not in use. You can wake the screen by double-tapping and swiping through various pages.
Garmin’s Vivosmart is expected to be available in mid-September, and it’s already available for pre-order from Best Buy for $170.
