Asus is launching its most affordable Windows tablet to date. The Asus VivoTab 8 should hit the streets in October for $199.
The 8 inch Windows tablet is basically the same tablet as the VivoTab Note 8 which launched earlier this year… if you take away the active digitizer, stylus, and $330 starting price.
Asus first revealed the new VivoTab 8 at the IFA trade show in Berlin earlier this month, but the company wasn’t ready to talk about a US price or release date at the time.
Now we know that the tablet will be available in October for under $200.
For that price you get a tablet with an 8 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display with wide viewing angles, an Intel Atom Z3745 Bay Trail quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.
The tablet has a 15.2 Wh battery for up to 8 hours of run time and built-in GPS and 802.11n WiFi. There are 2MP cameras on the front and back of the tablet, and it features a microSD card slot for up to 64GB of removable stroage.
The Asus VivoTab 8 measures 8.3″ x 4.9″ x 0.35″ and weighs less than 12 ounces.
It’s not the cheapest Windows tablet available… HP and Toshiba bother offer more affordable models. But the Asus VivoTab 8 has more memory and storage than the HP Stream or Toshiba Encore Mini tablets and it has better screen viewing angles than Toshiba’s cheapest tablet.
Will there be a Note refresh or have they fixed the failing active digitizers on the current Note?
Fixed. There’s even a DIY https://forum.tabletpcreview.com/threads/diy-fix-for-the-asus-vivotab-note-8-pen-failure.63696/page-11
Aaaand… the DV8P still is better, cheaper, has a better camera and a digitizer (although it’s not Wacom)
The Dell is plagued by its Synaptics digitizer problems.
The Asus VivoTab Note’s Wacom digitizer problems have
apparently been fixed.
No HDMI output, no interest. That’s my take.
Is it “wide viewing angels” or “wide viewing angles”? 😛
I wonder how these less expensive windows machine fare in day to day usage.
I’ve had an Asus note 8 for seven months of every day use as a work device. The grind has taken its toll. I have a bent microUSB port that makes it hard to charge the device. The display is a mess, with lines that look like leaking LEDs. I’ve had none of the digitizer failure that others have reported. In all, its been a reliable device, but it is a bit worse for the wear. Thankfully, I have MS Complete so I’ll be taking it in for service soon.
< 12 pounds! Fantastic!
Someone needs to make one with hdmi and 64gb for $200 or less
The Toshiba Encore 2 Write looks like it’ll be close.
