Amazon’s been selling Kindle Fire tablets for a few years, but the new Fire HD 6 is both the cheapest and the smallest model to date. This little tablet features a 6 inch screen (making it smaller than some smartphones) and sells for just $99 and up.

The Amazon Fire HD 6 has a 1280 x 800 pixel display. a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 8GB or 16GB of built-in storage, a 2MP rear camera, and a 0.3MP front-facing camera.

It’s an entry-level device with a mono speaker and single-band WiFi. But it’s compact, measuring 6.7″ x 4.1″ x 0.4″ and weighing 10.1 ounces and it offers up to 8 hours of battery life.

The Fire HD 6 is also the first tablet from Amazon that the company refers to as “pocketable.” It’s also one of the first to come in a range of color options. Amazon offers black, white, blue, magenta, and yellow/green (or citron).

While the tablet runs Amazon’s custom version of Google Android, like all members of the Fire family it won’t run the Google Play Store. Instead it’s designed to work with the Amazon Appstore and Amazon’s eBook, music, video, and other digital media stores. But it has some nifty features including the ability to download content from Amazon Prime Instant Video for offline playback.

The $99 entry-level model features 8GB of storage and “special offers” ads on the home screen. You can pay $119 for a 16GB model or add $20 to the price of either model to remove the ads.

Amazon also offers a new Fire HD 7 tablet for $139 and up and a more powerful Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 for $379.

  1. MT8135ARMv71.7 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 and 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A7PowerVR G6200 (2 clusters) @ 600 MHz

    1. Hmm, that’s what the product site says: “Quad-Core: 2 @ 1.5 Ghz + 2 @ 1.2 GHz”. 4 Core BIG.little? Or a special SKU? Does it ring a bell to anyone?

      1. It’s confirmed to be a Mediatek chip. Most likely it’s the MT8135 which was rumored to be appearing in a Kindle Fire this year.

  2. Not a big Amazon fan, but I actually think, at this price, if the screen is good, these will sell pretty well.
