LG is preparing to launch its second smartwatch featuring Google’s Android Wear software… and this time it’s round.

The LG G Watch was one of the first Android Wear devices to go on sale when it launched this summer for $229. The company’s new model features similar specs, but the LG G Watch R looks a bit more like a traditional wristwatch since it has a smaller, round watch face instead of a square display.

The watch features a 1.3 inch, 320 x 320 pixel plastic OLED display which LG says uses 100 percent of the watch face (which may be a dig at the upcoming Motorola Moto 360 which has a black bar at the bottom of the circle).

LG’s G Watch R has a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage, just like the original G Watch.

It features an IP67 rated dust and water resistant design, a 9-axis sensor, a heart rate monitor, and a 410mAh battery.

The watch comes with a 22mm calf skin leather strap, but the wristband is removable if you want to swap it out with a different strap.

LG will show off the G Watch R at the IFA show in Berlin next week. The company hasn’t yet revealed a price or release date.

Update: Apparently it will sell for 299 Euros in Europe.

  1. Easily the most traditional looking smart watch I’ve seen. Was wondering when somebody would capitalize on the looks of the traditionally largest traditional watch type – dive watch.
The ‘stem’ should have been at the 4:30 rather than the 3 O’clock position though. I’m sure it is a large watch and that would help keep it from digging into wrists as users flex their hand back.
Also very curious to see if the bezel acts as any kind of control for the watch or is simply a dumb disconnected bezel. Either way will be curious to see how good the bezel is. Nice positive ratcheting and the ability to turn only in the forward direction are both strong positives. Good marking with good night visibility is a must. The unidirectional bezel is a lot more important in an actual dive watch but I still prefer it even in the fresh air.

    1. To me, it doesn’t look like the bezel rotates at all (if it does, it will be hard get ahold of, it’s quite smooth). Nice of them to use a 22mm strap, easy to find options (though I assume the heart monitor will require the caseback to touch your skin, no NATO strap). Interesting that it has a crown at all – I assume it’s a pusher for interacting with Android, not setting the watch…
