Asus has yet-another variation of its Transformer Book T100 2-in-1 Windows tablet on the way. Last week I spotted a few mentions of the new Transformer Book T100TAM on the web, but couldn’t find any differences between the device and the models that were already available for purchase.

Now TLBHD has posted an initial review of the new model and it looks like Asus has improved the case and screen design, while most features remain unchanged.

The Asus Transformer Book T100TAM features an Intel Atom Z3775 quad-core Bay Trail processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of solid state storage, and Windows 8.1 software.

You can use it as a tablet or attach the included keyboard dock and use the system as a notebook. The system gets up to 8 hours of battery life and takes about 3 hours to fully charge when using the included charging cable (or longer if you’re using the tablet while it’s charging — the model I reviewed last year also featured pretty slow charging).

The processor’s a bit faster than the Atom Z3740 chip from last year’s model, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Transformer Book T100 with the new Z3775 processor.

It is the first time Asus has offered a model with an aluminum lid and edges and a new display panel which TLBHD says offers better color accuracy.

For the most part the new model is a minor update to the Transformer Book T100 line and it’s probably not worth upgrading if you already have one. Even if you don’t already have one, you might want to opt for a plastic model anyway: you’ll probably be able to find one for less than the $399 list price of the T100TAM and you’ll get a tablet that’s a little lighter than the 1.33 pound Transformer Pad 100TAM.

  1. I wonder if this will have a more complete UEFI. That is it can boot UEFI compatible Linux distros out of the box.

    1. The issue isn’t whether it has a complete UEFI, it already does, the issue is it’s only a 32bit UEFI and most work done to get Linux distros to work with UEFI has been done for 64bit UEFI…

So, it’s unlikely to change until we start seeing models being offered with 4GB of RAM and thus 64bit UEFI… Since the type of UEFI has to match up with the type of OS being booted and they won’t push 64bit OS until they push 4GB or more RAM…

  2. I really like this.form factor but I guess I’m waiting for a few more things to co.e together.

    More ram.
    Better graphics chip.
    Maybe a replaceable HD?

So far I like my android for mobile more than my win 8 tablet. The win 8 tablet has a very different touch sensitivity and some of the UI elements are hard to activate, like threading a needle.

    1. Unless you absolutely need the long battery life and greater portability, the Venue 11 Pro Haswell version has all three (not 100% certain on the replaceable SSD, but it’s easily accessible if you take off the back). And a replaceable battery to boot.

My refurb one has been going well for the last month aside from some minor issues with the speakers and external display.

    1. MS lowered the Minimum Specs for Tablets with 8.1u1 to 1GB of Ram and 16GB of Storage, so it’s not minimum spec at least, but i agree that the fact BayTrail Tablets mostly come with 2GB or are “professional” devices with corresponding pricetags is the main reason i don’t yet own one.

    2. At first I thought that as well. But it turned out to be surprisingly good. Chrome runs with 7-8 active tabs without a hiccup, Office is snappy and even Photoshop is usable (not great, but it runs at a speed I can work with). External screen, BT keyboard & mouse and my DV8P is a perfect little office machine that fits in my coat pocket, and I don’t even need to bring a charger since any 1000+ mA phone charger will work with it just fine.

      1. The only thing stopping the DV8P from being the “perfect little office machine that fits in my coat pocket” is the fact that you can’t charge it while using the USB.

        1. You can, with ~$10 worth of cable from ebay. I think the lack of HDMI is a bigger issue, but since I have an USB video adapter it’s no problem for me.

          1. I’d sooner carry a 2 in 1 like the T100, than a mess of wires.

          2. The cables and the USB-VGA remains in the office. Why would I carry a charger for a device that runs 10 hours and can be recharged from any USB?

          3. I suppose we have different needs. My thinking is that with a T100, I have a mouse touchpad, and keyboard built in. So while you do have the benefit of these features while at your desk on the DV8P, the T100 has this benefit everywhere. Also the T100 has an HDMI out, along with a full-size USB, and Micro USB. So I can charge it, output video to a monitor, and have an external HDD all connected, with no USB hubs, or any other mess to carry.

          4. True, but it’s bigger and heavier, if I’d carry that package, I could just take my way more powerful Elitebook 2730p.

          5. Personally I’d love an 8in 2-in-1. Like a dv8 pro, but with a detachable keyboard. But i might be alone in this

  3. Does it have gorilla glass 3? I dropped my t100 once and screen cracked pretty bad. Got a dell venue 11 pro now, the asus sits gathering dust.

    1. Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant. It will still crack if you drop it unfortunately.
