These days you can find a growing number of Android tablets that feature Intel processors. But what if you want to install Android on your existing notebook, tablet, or desktop PC which has an Intel or AMD processor?

There are a few different ways to do it… but one of the best is to use Android-x86. It’s a modified version of Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code designed to run on devices with AMD or Intel chips and the team has just released the first stable build based on Android 4.4 KitKat.

You can install it on a PC much the same way you would install Ubuntu or another Linux-based operating system… and you can also try it without installing anything by using the LiveCD.

You can visit the Android-x86 download site to find the latest version of the software, which is Android-x86 4.4-r1 at the moment.

Along with the move to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the latest version also includes support for HD and full HD video playback in apps thanks to ffmpeg and stagefright plugins, OpenGL ES hardware acceleration for devices with Intel or AMD Radeon graphics, and a KitKat-style app launcher (which is the Trebuchet launcher developed by the folks at CyanogenMod).

  3. I have an Acer Olympic 1810T with an intel SU7300, 4GB and a 128GB ssd. everything except BT is working (might be a failed bt card since it doesn’t work in windows either) but its smooth, fast, function buttons, wifi work and its 3d accellerated with the 945gm chipset. Seems to be around 17000 on antutu which is putting it between a nexus 5 and htc one, so all in all it is really useable and pretty snappy. 3d games are working well too. Im surprised at how far this has come in a short time.

  4. Anyone have a good guide to get this running from a flash drive? Would love to try it out on my ASUS T100.

    1. Its fairly easy, download the iso, download unetbootin – format the flash key as fat32, load the iso into unetbootin and then write it to the key.. set your boot device in bios.

      1. Thanks, unfortunately can’t get it working. Would only boot to Windows at first even though I changed the boot order. Then disabled Secure Boot per some googling, but it would not boot properly — brought me to a garbled screen and went into a weird boot loop.

I then tried following the instructions here for installing Ubuntu (but with the Android ISO):

        https://liliputing.com/2013/10/booting-ubuntu-asus-transformer-book-t100.html

But Rufus would not let me write the file in GPT mode, saying “When using UEFI Target Type, only EFI bootable ISO images are supported.”

        1. Any solution since then? Seem to be having a similar issue as above.

      2. But anyway I guess they haven’t gotten it working properly on a T100, per the XDA thread linked in that post.

  5. I ran the liveCD this on my Acer Aspire 5733 laptop and it ran surprisingly well. Even the sleep functions worked. Logged into the Play store downloaded and ran Antutu – got about 38000.

  6. also, while the iso does contain a working houdini lib and set of arm libs, it will ONLY EVER work on intel chips. i have total failure with houdini running arm apps on AMD.

  7. I’d love to get this running on a micro sd oon my dell venue 8 pro, is that feasible?

  8. Put it in a virtual machine and then you can run it inside of Windows in your hybrid device. My Dell XPS 12 is way better and more powerful than the wimpy stuff that powers Android.

    1. I am thinking of running a virtual machine of this on a lenovo yoga 11s Ubuntu… I don’t have Windows on it. Poor implementation of software for such great hardware IMO.

    1. I got an Android 4.3 version to work, but sadly it is “not compatible” with Clash of Clans.

  9. It is a hybrid ISO. you don’t need a loopback entry in GRUB. use ‘dd’ to put the image on a usb stick and voila! Live disc. or install. your choice. or use unetbootin if yer on windows to install the ISO to a flash stick.

    1. Actually it is my desire to put the ISO onto a USB stick along with *other* ones, so that I can use the GRUB2 loopback system with menu to select the OS that I want to boot. It looks like this should be possible, but I’d rather not use ‘trial & error’ to figure it out 🙂

  10. I’d be interested in a GRUB2 loopback ‘menuentry’ to boot this ISO from a USB stick 🙂
