FreedomPop offers free limited wireless data, voice, and text to smartphone users. Now the company’s branching out into tablets.

You can pick up an iPad mini or Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 from FreedomPop and use the tablet to make phone calls, surf the web, or send text messages for free using FreedomPop’s voice over IP network.

Existing tablet owners can also bring their own 4G LTE tablet.

Customers will get 500MB of 4G data, 200 voice minutes, and 500 text messages for free. That’s the same deal FreedomPop offers for smartphone customers.

If you need more than that, you can pay for a premium plan.

FreedomPop sells an iPad mini with LTE for $319 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 with LTE for $199. The iPad mini is a 1st-generation model with 16GB of storage and the Samsung tablet is a 7 inch model with 16GB of storage.

To bring your own tablet, you’d enter your MAC address at the FreedomPop website and download an app. Any tablet that supports Sprint’s 4G LTE network should work.

  1. Just checked the FreedomPop website to see if service was available in my area. Guess they are one of the leaders in latest trend of companies who only care about how much they can SPY on their customers. In order to check coverage I have to supply a VALID email address (so they can SPAM me), agree to their privacy policy (they profit by SELLING info on me), and their Terms and Conditions (I must agree that they can SPY on me so that I can’t complain about it when they SPY on me). Did I read any of their legalese BS or supply an address so they can SPAM me ? Of course not.

All that just to check coverage ? No thank you. I’d rather work with a legitimate company that actually values their customers and customer’s privacy. Does such a thing exist in the telecom industry, though. I’m beginning to wonder it they are ALL evil.

  2. Any tablet will work? It sounds like you need an app, which makes me wonder if a Windows tablet will work.

A cheap, quad-core atom 8″ tablet with free LTE sounds like the perfect device.

    1. Nope. Only the ones Sprint allows them to activate will work. I have it on my EVO 4G. Yes. It’s just an app. And it sucks. It never receives calls for me and recently it started to force close on me. But you do get 500MB data. I use it as a backup if I go out and need to text (google voice).

  3. “Now the company is branching out into tabelts…”
Brad, is that a new form of wearable device?
Maybe it’s a big buckle or something. ..

  4. Anyone know how it actually works at the 500MB limit? does it cut you off or do you start racking up charges?

    1. That depends, you can turn off auto top-up and have your account suspended when you reach your limit, or you can turn it on if you want to get “auto top-ups” in $10 increments for data refills of about 1GB per top-up.

    2. I’m guessing they start to charge once you hit over the limit. Really I feel like the free tier is meant as a backup for people who don’t do voice calls at all and just need data only occasionally. The data allotments they offer though seem to be very cheap if you just have a compatible device.
