Sony’s SmartBand is the first wearable device from the Japanese electronics company, and it’s a fitness and activity tracker designed to pair with your smartphone and help you keep track of your movements and fitness goals… as well as your social interactions and other aspects of your digital life.

Introduced at CES in January, the SmartBand is now available in the US for $100.

At the heart of the SmartBand is a removable module called Core which does most of the heavy lifting including motion sensing, vibration, and more. You can pop out the Core and put it in a different band and eventually Sony may offer clips or other peripherals that you can use instead of a wristband.

The Core features NFC for pairing with an Android 4.4 or later phone and uses Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy to communicate with your phone. It works with Sony’s Smart Connect and Lifelog apps.

It features 3 LED lights and support for vibration to alert you about incoming calls, text messages, alarms, or other notifications. The SmartBand is IP58 water resistant and features a 35mAh battery that’s good for up to 5 days of use.

There’s no display, so the SmartBand will never be a smartwatch replacement. It can’t show weather forecasts or caller ID. But along with the Lifelog app, you can use it to track music, photos, notes, and other information to create a sort of virtual diary and not just a list of how many steps you took each day.
