Panasonic has launched one of the first 2-in-1 laptops based on a new Intel Education 2-in-1 reference design. The Panasonic 3E is a rugged Windows notebook that becomes a tablet when you separate the display from the keyboard.

It’s aimed at schools with students in Kindergarten through 12th and features a few things you won’t often find on a Windows laptop including a thermometer probe and optional magnification lens that turns the camera into a sort of microscope.

The Panasonic 3E features a 10 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel IPS display, an Intel Atom Z3740D quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB to 64GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and Windows 8.1 Pro for Education 32-bit software.

It has an IP51 dust and water resistance case and it’s designed to withstand a fall of about 70cm (or 2.3 feet).

Other features include a micro HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port on the tablet and a USB 2.0 port on the keyboard dock, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, Intel Wireless Display, and Intel Education software. The tablet also comes with a capacitive stylus.

The dock is reversible, allowing the tablet to face the keyboard or face away from it. There are front and rear cameras, and the tablet should get up to 8 hours of battery life.
